Day 1: Arrival- Kigali city tour

Meet and greet our company representative and your birding guide for a transfer to your booked hotel for check in and an overnight stay. Depending on your time of arrival, you will take a city tour to Kigali to explore different historical and cultural sites including the Kigali memorial genocide. During your Kigali city tour, look out for some birds like cape dove, Ross’s Turaco, red-billed fire finch, bronze sunbird, brimstone canary, cardinal woodpecker, pied crow, cinnamon chested bee-eater, pin tailed whydah, hamerkop, green-winged ptyilia, white-browed robin chat, northern fiscal, African harrier hawk, tropical boubou, dark capped bulbul, African pied wagtail and speckled mousebird. Later drive back to the hotel for relaxation, dinner and overnight at Onomo Hotel Kigali.

Day 2: Bird watching in Nyabarongo and Lake Nyarutarama

Have an early morning breakfast and drive to Nyabarongo and Lake Nyarutarama for full day birding trip. Expect to see the following bird species in Nyabarongo wetlands;

Black-headed Heron, African Jacana, Black-headed Gonolek, African hobbies, Great Swamp Warbler, White-winged Warbler, African Openbill, Long-toed Lapwing, Yellow Wagtail, Common Snipe, yellow-billed duck, Papyrus Gonolek, Spur-winged Geese, Great White Egret, Cattle Egret, African Marsh Harrier, Little Egret, Squacco Heron, Grey Heron, Boart hawk, Goliath Heron, Yellow-billed Stork among others. Have lunch and drive to Lake Nyarutarama for another birding tour in search for bird species like White-faced Whistling Duck, Red-billed Teal, African Spoonbill, Spur-winged Geese, Little Grebe, Squacco Heron, Common Moorhen, Black Egret, Hadada Ibis, Black Crake, Cater Egret, Yellow-billed Duck, Hottentot Teal and Black-headed Heron.

The vegetation along the shores of lake Nyarutarama inhabits several birds like Black Kite, pygmy kingfisher, winding Cisticola, tawny flanked Prinia, paradise flycatcher, white-browed coucal, grey capped warbler, African hobby, swamp flycatcher and the African Fish Eagle while the eastern side of the Lake with acacia woodlands is a home to mountain buzzards and tint birdlife like martin, swallows, sunbirds which make up part of 26 sun-birds in Rwanda and swifts. Retire and drive back to your hotel for dinner and overnight at Onomo Hotel Kigali.

Day 3: Transfer to Akagera National Park

Wake up very early morning and set off for Akagera National park arriving early for a wondering birding trip. Look out for several birds like Red-faced Barbet, Papyrus Gonolek, White-headed, Black and familiar Chats, Bennetts Woodpecker, Carruther’s and Tabora Cisticolas, White-winged and Broad-tailed Warblers and Miombo Wren-Warblers among others. Dinner and overnight stay at Akagera Game Lodge

Day 4: Full day birding & Game drive in the Akagera National Park

Have early morning breakfast and head to the park for full day birdwatching and game drive safari. Today, look out for birds in Akagera national park like; African fish eagle, African jacana, Papyrus gonolek, Bateleur, Booted eagle, Squacco heron, African harrier hawk, Amur falcon, Beaudouin’s snake eagle, Blue-shouldered robin-chat, Cabanis’s bunting, Crested barbet, Denham’s bustard, Dimorphic egret, Carruthers’s cisticola, Brown-chested lapwing, Eleonora’s falcon, Grasshopper buzzard, Northern brown-throated weaver among others. You will also encounter several animals like leopards, elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebras among others. Later drive back to Kigali for dinner and overnight stay at Onomo Hotel Kigali

Day 5: Bird watching in Bugesera and Departure

After breakfast, drive to Bugesera valley for another birding safari to look for Papyrus Gonolek and other species.
